Help Needed for Orphanage in
Friends of the Orphans, a local organization that supports homes for orphaned and abandoned children, received a call for help from its home in Santa Ana, El Salvador. The home, Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, (NPH), which means “Our Little Brothers and Sisters, suffered structural damage when Saturday’s earthquake struck El Salvador. Amazingly, the 400-year old church next door where the little ones are baptized collapsed in ruins. Nervous but unhurt, the 100 children that live at the home are sleeping on the patios until their facilities can be inspected for safety.
Midst the chaos existing because of the earthquake and aftershocks, Olegario Campos, Executive Director of the home, is ready to receive more children. Thirty abandoned babies, age 3 months to 3 years, are scheduled to be taken into the home on Wednesday. A government program is placing the children with NPH. They expect to deliver an additional 30 children the first of February, for a total of 60 new children. “We need to provide the children with a safe roof over their heads before the next rainy season,” appeals the director. “In the meantime, we will organize an emergency shelter in tents.”
This influx of babies will bring their total census to 160. Emergency funds are needed to purchase tents, cribs, sheets, clothing and food for the children.
